| Description:
|
| In 1984 one half of the nation's coal, our most abundant fossil fuel, originated in Appalachia. Harvey looks at the prospects for Appalachian coal, considering the impact of technologies such as fluidized bed combustion and coal-water slurry and the issue of energy policy and fuel alternatives. He concludes that the recovery and enduring health of the coal industry depend on resurgence of world and domestic economic activity, social and political stability, and persistent government regulation.
